A COAST which has shaped our world and yours.

COAST is a gathering of stories, histories and people, encouraging you to explore and understand the coastline, landscape, heritage and culture of the west coast of Scotland. An ambitious three year project between the Year of Coasts and Waters in 2020 and the Year of Scottish Stories in 2022.

Uncover how our communities have been shaped and our environment changed in an immersive exhibition sharing stories gathered by COAST story gatherers from the west coast of Scotland.

Over the last two years, a team of 32 local Story Gatherers have been working across the west coast of Scotland collecting and collating local stories from their individual areas. Over 1300 individual stories about people, places and happenings have been gathered ranging from a few sentences to epic tales. 400 of these have now been curated for exhibition on the COAST website, App and six touring exhibitions.

Coordinated by Carron Tobin ruralDimensions and Graham Hogg Lateral North. Exhibition installations produced by Lateral North working with Soluis.

This project is led by the University of the Highlands and Islands (UHI) funded through NatureScot’s Natural and Cultural Heritage Fund, with match funding from CalMac and UHI.
