Bookbinding workshop
The Rockfield Centre has a fund available to support those who may not otherwise be able to attend our workshops. Please contact arts@therockfieldcentre.org.uk for more information.
In this workshop book designer Beth Lancaster will teach you how to use book binding tools to make beautiful French Link-Stitch books.
A more challenging style of bookbinding, this introduces the age-old techniques used to bind books before glue was readily available.
In this workshop, we will be making an A6 book with several hand sewn signatures. The finished book will be hard-covered and decorated with ribbons and closures to make a beautiful piece of art that can be used or given away as a special present. This style of binding offers great flexibility in using the book as there is no solid spine meaning the pages lie almost completely flat.
All materials are provided but attendees are encouraged to bring their own decorative papers to include if they wish.
Beth Lancaster
Beth Lancaster is a book binder based on the outskirts of Lanark. She designs and makes books to sell using many different techniques and papers collected from people and places all around the world. She is a climate conscious person and wherever possible uses unwanted materials in her book binding. This leads to many unusual, beautiful creations all of which are unique.
Beth has worked as a trainer, tutor and workshop facilitator for many years and is happy and comfortable in a variety of settings, meaning that she is able to be flexible with her approach to make the workshop an enjoyable and fun experience for all who attend. As well as bookbinding, Beth is a keen crafter and when not making books, can be found making bobbin lace or crocheting silly hats!
